Mansfield mentions. It had a way leading to it from Lowell Street over the eastern end of the John Procter lot as shown on my map. This way is still used as well as the bars opening into it on Lowell Street a few rods east of the westerly way leading southerly to the Jacobs, or Wyman, place.
Jacobs as stated above, unless we suppose the expression to mean bars leading from the John Procter lot where the way enters the Philip H. Saunders place, or Marsh pasture, as Mrs. Mansfield calls it. Perhaps the latter locality is the most probable since it is high rocky ground; but which bars were meant is uncertain.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Proctor remained in jail to await the birth of her child. Even after she gave birth to her son on January 27, she was not executed, for reasons unknown.
Elizabeth remained in jail until May, when Governor Phipps released the last few prisoners of the witch trials. Once Elizabeth Proctor was freed, not only had she and her deceased husband been stripped of their legal rights due to their convictions, but Elizabeth also discovered John had written her out of his will.
John Proctor had probably done so because he expected Elizabeth to be convicted along with him and knew she would not be able to inherit his estate. As a result, she was left penniless. A year later, on April 19, , the court restored her legal rights and awarded Elizabeth her dowry.

House of John Proctor: Witchcraft Martyr , Peabody Historical Society, Rebecca, Thank you so much for writing this piece on John Proctor. My family discovered in that he is a Great to the 8th grandfather through his daughter Sarah who was also tried, but fortunately not hung.
With your writing, it is the first time I have been able to read his words written to Boston to try to get them to stop the madness. I think I may be related through Sarah Proctor Dodge and would like to explore this link more. She was examined, indicted, and sent to jail on April 11th. During her examination, her husband John defended her and said that the girls were hallucinating and the information they gave was false. Later that month, 31 men from Ipswich, Massachusetts , filed a petition attesting to the upstanding character of John and Elizabeth Proctor, denying that they had ever seen anything that would indicate they were witches.
The following month, another petition was filed on behalf of the Proctors which included 20 signatures of men and women, some of which were from some of the wealthiest landowners of Topsfield and Salem Village. This petition questioned spectral evidence and testified to the Christian lives that John and Elizabeth had led.
The letter described torture used to elicit confessions and pleaded with the ministers to intervene, asking them to either have the trials moved to Boston or have new judges appointed. The clergy would respond by meeting at Cambridge on August 1, , and would eventually come to the conclusion that they needed to take action to stop the Salem madness. However, it would not be soon enough for John Proctor. On August 2, , the court met in Salem to discuss the fate of John and Elizabeth Proctor and several others.
At some point during this time, John wrote his will, in which he did not include his wife Elizabeth. Though the reason that he did not include her is unknown, many historians believe this was because he assumed she would be executed along with him. On August 5, , John and Elizabeth Proctor were tried, convicted, and sentenced to be hung by the neck until dead.
John pleaded at his execution for a little respite of time, claiming he was not fit to die. His plea was, of course, unsuccessful.
Elizabeth; however, would not immediately be hanged because she was pregnant. Sound mind Sworn to 3 Dec by Philip Fowler. Joseph Proctor stated that he did not think his Brother John Proctor was of a disposing mine. James White was also present and made oath.

From Hutchinson's History: [19] "Elizabeth Procter was charged about the same time: Her husband, as every good husband would have done, accompanied her to her examination, but it cost the poor man his life.
Some of the afflicted cried out upon him also, and they were both committed to prison. Charles W Upham wrote: [20] Mary Warren testified, with the appearance of animosity and vindictiveness, against her master John Procter, and her mistress his wife; thus contributing to secure the conviction of both, and the death of the former. He had denounced the entire company of the accusers, and their revenge demanded his sacrifice.
