Jumping from couplets to capitalism, Alphonso, or at least its concentrated pulp, has starred for a decade alongside the waiting, pining, aching Bollywood beauty, Katrina Kaif, in a series of TV commercials for a popular mango drink made by Pepsi. Some chapters of the expressly sultry campaign were even called aamasutra , a nod to the Indian coital canon Kama Sutra.
In fashion, the mango inspired the instantly recognizable paisley pattern, a teardrop-shaped icon that gained couture approval in Europe during the British rule of India.
Nicknamed Hapus in India, the internationally coveted variety is believed to have emerged after the arrival of the Portuguese in India in the 15th century.
Writer and mangophile Vivek Menezes reckons that the mango was developed in the western state of Goa, where Jesuit priests used existing mango trees to introduce the technique of grafting, already popular in Europe.
Their labor bore fruits, more refined than ever. Jump ahead several centuries to the British Raj, and the exploding appeal of the Alphonso is far more traceable. Eventually a time-tested backdrop for international handshakes, it was called upon to sweeten diplomatic relations when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Indian premier, visited American President John F. Kennedy in It also possibly benefited from being in the right place at the right time.
That the more perishable regional varieties cannot travel too far works just fine for people like my grandmother. For it is not the last Alphonso, but the last Himsagar mango that she seeks in end-of-summer markets, a musky-sweet east Indian variety responsible for her toothless fangirling.
As far as she is concerned, the world can keep its Alphonso. When the fruit is young it will be dark green and when it becomes ripe the outer skin turns cheerful golden-yellowish and its flesh becomes saffron-coloured. The fruit is a seasonal fruit and available mainly during the mid of April to June. It can be planted in a pot and grow as a bonsai tree. Because of the pot, the plant will not grow as it is on the ground. Pruning has to be done even it is in the pot. The container mango tree will grow up to 4 to 8 feet.
The container should be with drainage holes. Before filling the pot with fertilisers and soil, add broken pottery to make the drainage more effective. The mango tree does not require constant care or watering. The first fertilising of the soil before planting the tree is the most important factor to check. Make a mixture with topsoil, cow manure, 2kg of bone meal and 2kg of phosphate and fill the hole and plant the tree in this mixture.
In the second year give grams of nitrogen and potassium and grams of phosphorous. Natural fertilisers such as cow manure, compost and other kinds can be added.
This will preserve the natural traits of the soil. Alga causes this disease. The leaves get orange spots. Normally, the disease is harmless. To avoid this issue prune and use pesticide regularly. Both varieties are very delicious and possess their own unique quality. Well, when it comes to the reasons that made Alphonso, the king of mangoes, there are some specific reasons. The qualities that an alphonso mango possess are quite unique and good.
When they ripe the outer layer of these mangoes is turned into a bright yellow with an orange tint, just like a sunrise in the morning from the top. The Alphonso mangoes have a vibrant and sweet taste. The taste of these mangoes is also a combination of many fruits such as apricot, melon, peach, and honey. Alphonso mangoes are highly popular and are the most marketed mangoes around the world.
Around In fact, many years ago, in , when US President George Bush came for the first time to India, he was offered Alphonso mangoes, and after trying them, he said that these are the best mangoes he has ever tasted. Another such incident was in when the US offered a deal with India to export these Alphonso mangoes in exchange for the Harley Davidson bikes.
These all instances that show the craze and popularity of Alphonso mangoes all around the world. Another reason for these mangoes to be crowned as king of mangoes is the geographical advantage, as they are cultivated in the coastal areas and within volcanic soil. These are protected by their own GI geographical indicator tag and thus are the best tasting mangoes due to their unique flavor and taste. Alphonso mangoes need to be given attention and treated well, just like a king to be treated, so it is believed that it is called the king of mangoes.
