The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was airlifted in critical condition to Broward Health Medical Center. According to an FHP report, a pickup truck driven by a year-old man from Naples was heading west on Alligator Alley in the outside travel lane, approaching Mile Marker 39 and the other vehicle, an SUV, was traveling east.
Troopers said the truck experienced a tire failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, cross the grass median and travel into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes shortly after 6 p. Authorities said the truck struck the left front side of the SUV and both vehicles caught fire. The year-old man who was driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic cameras showed the location of the crash as three miles west of the Broward County rest stop.
